How To Improve Cognitive Ability Among Undergraduates

It is generally accepted that cognitive ability predicts academic achievement, and that parental involvement and expectations form part of the constellation of factors that predict their children’s academic achievement in school examination, research project work, seminar, thesis, dissertation and other extracurricular activities. Cognitive abilities are aspects of mental functioning, such as memorizing and remembering; inhibiting and focusing attention; speed of information processing; and spatial and causal reasoning. Individual differences between people are measured by comparing scores on tests of these mental abilities.

Individuals with higher cognitive abilities are likely to be better educated as they choose more often to continue education or easier meet access requirements to enter, e.g., university after secondary education. On the other hand, education itself also improves cognitive skills. Cognitive skills shape a variety of later-life outcomes. Together with non-cognitive skills, they form an important part of an individual’s human capital as they constitute personal skills.

COGNITION

Cognition refers to “the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the sense. It is also the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.

Cognition is a term referring to the mental processes involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension. These cognitive processes include thinking, knowing, remembering, judging, and problem-solving. These are higher-level functions of the brain and encompass language, imagination, perception, and planning.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COGNITIVE ABILITY

Cognitive ability may be defined as a “mental capability that involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly, and learn from experience.

Cognitive ability is very important especially for students. A high cognitive ability is a step ahead academic performance. It improves and fastens understanding as well as comprehension in the classroom.

Cognitive ability improves thinking, sense of judgment and also problem solving. As undergraduates it is very important to have a high cognitive ability because it will help them perform better. By developing cognitive skills, you help your brain complete this process more quickly and efficiently, and you ensure that you understand and effectively process that new information. In the workplace, cognitive skills help you interpret data, remember team goals, pay attention during an important meeting and more.

Cognitive skills are the mental capabilities we need to successfully learn academic subjects. Underlying cognitive skills must function well for us to efficiently and easily read, think, prioritize, understand, plan, remember, and solve problems. When Cognitive Skills are weak, Academic Learning is at best, a struggle. When Cognitive Skills are strong, academic learning is fast, easy, efficient, and fun.

In conclusion cognitive ability Improves comprehension, develops problem-solving skills, promotes long-term learning, improves confidence, and instills a love of learning.

HOW TO IMPROVE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF COGNITION

How students learn (i.e., how they are challenged to learn) is a key component of the education process. If undergraduate students are to develop their ability to think at higher levels of cognition, they must be challenged to do so by both professors’ in-class instructional techniques, and by the academic challenges provided throughout the course.

There are various ways in which cognitive ability can be improved theses are:

i. Physical Activity: Quite beneficial for the mind’s health and cognition as certain hormones are increased during exercise. This improves memory retention. Exercise also has positive effects on memory function. Children with poor motor skills also had poorer reading and arithmetic test scores. Those who engage with more physical activities, the more students had a higher cognitive function, scoring better in reading and arithmetic.

ii. Openness to Experience: be opened to learn, don’t be stiffed and close to new things. No man is an island and we learn every day. Therefore, if you must improve your cognitive ability them you must be open to experiences and general learning.

iii. Curiosity and Creativity: It’s been found that children who participate in reading books, writing and engaging in brain-stimulating activities at any age may preserve memory. Furthermore, those who are engaged in reading fictional books enhance brain function and connectivity. Allowing putting oneself in the shoes of another and visualizing the way the person does.

iv. Social Connections: Learning new and demanding skills while maintaining a social network are the elements of staying sharp and witty as students grow. Older people have long been encouraged to stay active and to flex their memory and learning through studies indicates that not all mind-engaging activities improve cognitive function. It’s important to let your students do something that is unfamiliar and mentally challenging. Openness to new experiences can change your students’ personality trait.

v. Mindfulness Meditation: The brain changes through meditation by reducing the stress which slows the progress of age-related cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease (it’s never too early). There’s a high correlation between perceived stress and Alzheimer’s disease. When students induce in a state of relaxation, which can be achieved through mindfulness, or any other kind of meditation.

vi. Brain-Training Games: stimulant-rich environments and problem-solving puzzles can be an effective contributing factor in preventing or delaying the onset of degenerative diseases in some people.

vii. Get Enough Sleep: It’s been known for decades that the brain requires sleep to manage and consolidate memory and learning. Even sleeping helps them master a new task. The brain benefits from sleep because by then, energy would be more available. Distractions and new inputs are fewer, and there is more time for a productive study session and get good grades.

viii. Reduce Chronic Stress: for an improved cognitive ability, it is important to reduce chronic stress or activities that could temper on your general health.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, cognitive ability is very important aside for academic purpose, it is important for every day dealings and interactions. Mental attractiveness is very important and admirable by all. Therefore, we must seek ways to always improve on ourselves which includes our mental ability.
